Announcement: The Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarships for 2023/24

The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama is pleased to announce “The Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarship” for the academic year 2023/24. The scholarship program is open for all full-time Tibetan graduate students (Master’s and Doctoral degrees) studying in Europe, the Americas, Australia, and Asia (excluding the Indian subcontinent). The online application portal is now open at www.dalailamafoundation.org and will close on April 23, 2023, at 11:59 pm (Zurich: GMT+1). Applications are only accepted online.

The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama was established by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in 2015 and aims to promote the values to which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is committed, i.e., the promotion of universal human values, religious harmony, Tibetan culture and ecology, and the revival of ancient Indian knowledge. Furthermore, the advancement and welfare of the Tibetan people and other people in need, irrespective of nationality, religion, and origin, is an essential purpose of the foundation.

The Scholarship aims to enrich and embolden Tibetan human capital and encourage students of Tibetan origin in a graduate field of study with the potential to contribute to the welfare and benefit of the Tibetan people and the global human family. Since its inception, approximately USD 2.5 million have been awarded to over 200 Tibetan students as a supplementary bursary. Recipients of past scholarships have enrolled in prestigious universities across the globe, pursuing a wide range of subjects such as Microbiology, Pharmacology, Epidemiology, Medical Physics, Environmental Engineering, Developmental Economics, Law, International Education, Clinical Psychology, Business Administration, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, International Affairs, and many others.

Applicants must provide official documentation of their acceptance into a graduate degree program at a university or professional school in Europe, the Americas, Australia, or Asia (excluding the Indian subcontinent). They also need to provide proof of their Tibetan heritage.

Current recipients wishing to renew their scholarships must submit a separate renewal application. However, scholarship renewals are limited to two years per study program. Therefore, students who have received two renewals for their current study program are not eligible for further scholarship renewal.

All information provided in the application must be complete, correct, and submitted on time. Incomplete applications, as well as submissions after the deadline, will not qualify for consideration. The independent Selection Committee of the Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarship program evaluates the applications. All applications will be acknowledged by email, and the decisions will be communicated individually after July 6, 2023.

Press Release: The Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarships 2022

Zurich, Switzerland, 20 July 2022 – The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama informed the award recipients of the 2022 Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarship Program on the 87th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

The Scholarship Program started in 2011 and since then, approximately US$ 2.5 million have been awarded to around 250 Tibetan students. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in their chosen field.

This year, 75 students from across the globe applied for the scholarship. A total of 45 students were selected by the independent selection committee for the scholarship. The recipients include graduate and Ph.D. scholars studying at prestigious universities in the United States of America, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Their chosen fields of study include Microbiology, Aerospace Engineering, Anthropology, Public Health, Applied Mathematics, Bioengineering, Epidemiology, Law, Medicine, and Acoustic Engineering among others.

The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama provides the scholarship on behalf of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who has designated and endowed the Foundation. The purpose of the scholarship is to further the human capital development of the Tibetan people by providing scholarships to Tibetan students for the pursuit of graduate studies in a field of their choice and as a proper vehicle to assist humanity and education.

The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama was founded by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and aims to promote basic human values, mutual understanding among religions, peace and non-violence and the protection of the environment. It helps to preserve the unique Tibetan culture and supports the Tibetan people, but also other people in need, regardless of nationality, religion, and origin.

The Foundation does not strive for profit and is tax-exempt by the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. It is financially backed by donations from the Founder and the public and managed by a Board of Directors chaired by the Founder, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Being an internationally acting foundation, the Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama is under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs.

The Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarship 2021

Zurich, 7 July 2021: The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama announced the recipients of the 2021 Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarship program today.

The awardees of the 2021 scholarship include 40 Tibetan graduate scholars, studying at prestigious Universities in North America, Europe and Asia – Academia Sinica – Taiwan, Columbia University, Harvard University, McGill University – Canada, New York University, Stanford University, University of California, University of Oxford and the University of South Bohemia – Czech Republic.

The areas of specialization of these MA and Ph.D students include Applied Mathematics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Environmental Science and Policy, Law, Medicine and Energy and Environmental studies and Hydrobiology among others.

The Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarship Program started in 2011 and since then, approximately US$ 2.3 million have been awarded to around 200 Tibetan students. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in their chosen field and who require financial help towards their tuition.

The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama provides these scholarships, on behalf of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, to contribute toward the benefit and betterment of humanity. The scholarship intends to support the development of human capital of the Tibetan people.

The program, established in 2011, grants scholarships for full-time Tibetan graduate students studying in Australia, Europe and the Americas in pursuit of Master’s and Doctoral degrees. A scholarship grant of up to USD 10,000 will be awarded to 10 to 18 exceptional candidates as a supplementary bursary.

The DLG Scholarship aims to encourage Tibetan students in a graduate field of study with relevance and potential to contribute to the welfare of the Tibetan people and humanity.

The Dalai Lama Foundation Awards Scholarships 2019

Seattle, US, 8 August 2019 – The Dalai Lama Foundation’s 2019 Graduate Scholarship Program today announced the selection of 16 new and 14 renewed scholarships. Awardees will receive a scholarship of up to $10,000. A total of US$ 239,500 has been awarded.

The DLF Graduate Scholarship Program started in 2011. Since then, approximately US$ 2 million has been awarded to around 160 Tibetan students. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate excellence within their chosen fields, who are of good character, and who manifest compassion and wisdom, values dear to Tibetan culture, in their work.

The Foundation provides these scholarships, on behalf of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, as part of a wish to contribute to the benefit of humanity. The scholarship is intended to support the development of human capital of the Tibetan people.

Like previous beneficiaries, recipients of the 2019 scholarships have enrolled in American, Canadian, France, German and Switzerland universities pursuing PhD studies in Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Law, and Comparative & International Education. Graduate students specializing in Business Administration, Computer Science, International Affairs, Nano Electronic Systems, and Technology & Economics.

The Foundation’s independent Scholarship Selection Committee diligently reviewed each of the applications, short-listed potential candidates and then conducted individual interviews.

From next year, the Graduate Scholarship Program will be administered by Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama based in Switzerland.
