The Missing Peace (in a box) is a “new” portable traveling exhibition—an offshoot of the large exhibition of original work titled The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama.
The Box is a complete exhibition packaged within in a 2 by 3 foot rectangular box. The Box contains 14 high quality reproductions plus one more print with thumbnails and descriptions of each work, and a folder containing information and curricula for middle and high school students. Created in response to the challenges of touring a complex exhibition of original art, The Box is a pared-down vehicle by which the benefits of The Missing Peace Project are made accessible to a larger audience.
The Journey
The Box begins and travels as a gift. Once an exhibition has taken place, the organizers agree to gift The Box to another location, and so on, with the only goal being to share the work with as many people as possible. Each decision is made in the spirit of “pay-it-forward,” and based on the idea that each act of giving increases the greater good in unforeseen ways. In addition to showing the works within The Box, each location is asked to create an exhibition that invites contributions and interactions from the local community. This could be in the form of original art by local artists, written responses to the works, or documentation of peaceful actions inspired by the exhibit, to name a few. We then encourage the exhibiting community to add to our online community for The Missing Peace (in a box) to share what they have experienced and created through the exhibit. The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama is a major art exhibition that presents art as a lens through which to see our common humanity and explore the many meanings of peace.
