ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Dalai Lama Foundation has become a reality through the generosity and efforts of many individuals, who have contributed their vision, enthusiasm, expertise, hard work, and financial support. Please forgive any unintentional oversights in putting together the following list of our wonderful volunteers and donors. Volunteers Many people pitched in as the foundation was just getting started in 2001. Karen Jacke and Tanya Roberts guided us through a process to clarify the values and operating principles of the organization that continues to serve us well. Arthur Kaufmann led us through the process of applying for non-profit status with the I.R.S., Deborah Ryan set up the accounting system, and Fredric Laurentine served as our first Director of Operations and Finance. Sophia Antipas designed our initial PowerPoint presentation and Losang Gyatso designed our stationery and business cards. Our initial brochure for the 2002 Kalachakra teachings in Graz, Austria, was translated by Cecilia Gomez and Anja Fulle (Spanish), Alexander Stashenko (Russian), Ida Salis and Anja Fulle (German), Ven. Lhundrub Jinpa and Roman Czarny (Polish), Arnaud Deshais and Karole Irene (French), and Michelle Gyorke and Nyssa Brennan (Italian). Also contributing their energy in the early days were Amy Critchett, Michael Davis, Mary Fischer, Jann Fitzgerald, Jennifer Holmes, Elad Levinson, Susi Lilly-Blean, Vida Shahamat, Kaliya Young, and John Wood of Room to Read. Throughout all, Nipun Mehta, along with his many friends at CharityFocus, has been a constant inspiration. On the administration front, Marsha Clark manages the office, including membership and communications. Marsha also coordinates our action-oriented partnerships, and works closely with Sean Brannan, Director of the Sera Mey Redevelopment Project. Rik Roberts serves as Chief Financial Officer. Robert Clark has done a bit of everything. Thanks to Liz Bremner and her highly-skilled team at the Foundation Incubator, including Eleanor Clement Glass and Annadore Kushner. The firm of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosatti in Palo Alto, California, provides legal services to the Foundation. Mark Parnes, who heads up the pro bono practice, brought us into WSGR, where we have enjoyed the experienced and steady guidance of Steve Berson and Clare Badaracco. Julia Riegel has recently been and is currently (2007) our attorney at WSG&R. Our Development Team has worked with the Foundation Board, as well as Tom Trabin and Marsha Clark, on fundraising. Jean Friedman provided invaluable advice throughout 2003. The 2002 Web Team put together the beautiful web site we used from 2001 thru 2003. Jean Yao was the force behind getting us online, serving as designer and implementer of the site, and enrolling Jai Suri and Ashvin Iyengar on the database & technology side. John Silliphant and Howard Wise pitched in, Roy Harvey provided hosting services, and Virginia Lyons produced our first several newsletters. The 2003 Web Team revised the site to include more databases, and added Java technology to the mix. Jim Schuyler, who volunteers his services as Chief Technical Officer for the Foundation, headed up the 2003 and 2004 efforts, with Gary A. Bolles providing advice and marketing expertise. Jims member enrollment system now supports the entire web site, and he supplies all servers and software for the site. The site has been dramatically revamped and expanded by The 2004 Web Team. Jack Schaub served as creative director, bringing together an incredible team including San Francisco artist Georgia Deaver, who designed the Dalai Lama Foundation logo, and Tracy Watson and Laura Medeiros who designed the look & feel for the Website. Jim Schuyler also contributed the software for the Ethics & Peace Knowledgebase, and worked with a team spanning several continents including Nigel Jones, Kemmy Lim, and Ngawang Chotak to populate the knowledgebase. As CTO, Jim supervises architecture and systems, and implements the behind-the-scenes java and databases. It was Leslie Millerd-Rogers, producer of the April 16 2004 event with His Holiness at U.C. Irvine, who turned to us over lunch one day and said, And the Dalai Lama Foundation will do a Website for the participants youth leadership & ethics program, to translate the days inspiration into ongoing action. Enter Randy Taran, who rose to the occasion to produce the YouthMoves website. Randy worked with Deborah Zimmerman-Herz to design the site, and then turned to the amazing team at Tumis Design, including Estria Miyashiro, Favianna Rodriquez, Tony Carranza and josé d lopez, who designed and implemented and implemented the many YouthMoves pages in one long, long, really long weekend. One of the initiatives stemming from His Holiness's visit to UC Irvine on April 16, 2004 is Seeds of Peace 2004, which took root thanks to the generosity of Michael Whitener at New Earth Nursery in Soquel, California, who donated 108 little redwood trees, and Laura Schaub, who lovingly turned each one into a beautiful offering and drove them all down to Irvine so they could share the stage with His Holiness and a bodhi tree seedling. The book and video lists on the website were assembled by Ngawang Chotak, Randy Taran, and the trio of Karen Schembs, Karlene Koketsu, and Sylvia Gerbl, long time students of the renowned teacher of childrens literature Kay Goines. Barb Gee provided inspiration and guidance for the formation of the Los Altos Study Group, which has met monthly for over a year, and produced the Ethics for the New Millennium Study Guide. The group includes Marsha Clark, Caryl Gopfert, Tony Hoeber, Karen Jacke, Cornelia Shonkwiler, and Deborah Whitman. Special thanks to Karen for her work in preparing the Study Guide. The beautiful cards we sent out as holiday greetings in 2003 were produced by Artists to Watch, led by husband and wife team Larry La Bonté and Kathryn T. Shaw. Don Farber was kind enough to allow us to use his beautiful photograph of His Holiness for the card. There were several additions to the Board of Directors during 2006, coming primarily from the ranks of volunteers who have given immense amounts of time to nurture our programs. These included Marsha Clark (Program Coordinator for the Foundation), Darlene Markovich (also President of The Committee of 100 for Tibet), Tom Nazario (a professor at the University of San Francisco [USF] and expert on the rights of children), and Jim Schuyler (volunteer CTO of the Foundation). Events and Projects Over the past 3 years weve produced a number of events in the Bay Area. Wendy Abraham and Carl Bielefeldt of the Stanford Center for Buddhist Studies helped bring Professor Michael Nagler and Professor Jan Willis to Stanford. Anthropologist Peter Gold came to Saratoga courtesy of Darlene Markovitch and Fred Shepardson of the Committee of 100 for Tibet. Linda Hoeber and Dixie Baker have generously opened their homes for Foundation gatherings, and Victoria Clark and Joy Kutaka-Kennedy (among many others) have been there to make it happen. Our Season of Blessings celebration in Fall, 2002, was produced in collaboration with Lobsang Tsering and the monks from Gyuto Monastery, with help from Laura Desmarais, Nicole Lea, Nancy Fireman, Parnian Kaboli, and the generous leadership of Martha Kanter and Carl Brown of De Anza College. Many hands helped produce our retreat and reception in Fall 2003, including Judy and Rick Nall and chef/DJ Joseph Siegal. Most recently Linda Hoeber helped produce Foundation President Tenzin Tethongs Tibetan Film Series in Saratoga. Finally, many happy people are grateful to Panchen Tsering, who has stayed up till the wee hours more than once preparing large batches of her Tibetan mo-mos for Foundation gatherings. During 2006 The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama became a reality, opening at the Fowler Museum at UCLA. The brainchild of Darlene Markovich, the staff and supporters of the Foundation played a large role in its creation. The Foundation commissioned a set of lesson plans and materials, integrated with middle school and high school curriculum. The website of the project was designed by Tank Design and Jim Schuyler provided much of the implementation, and all of the deployment and operation on behalf of the Foundation. He also created a virtual tour of the exhibition. Also in 2006 Diane Hatz coordinated a wildly-successful benefit concert by Krishna Das and Baird Hersey and Prana in New York City, which raised funds to support programs at the Foundation. Nawang Khechog and Sanford Biggers are contributing their time to present a benefit musical concert in April 2007. Marsha Clark, Eleanor Palacios and Kathleen Hill are coordinating the logistics of the event. The Foundations existence has been made possible through the generosity of our donors, who are inspired by the His Holiness's message of hope for humanity. For your trust and support we are profoundly grateful. A partial listing of Foundation supporters follows.
