ABOUT THE SERA MEY TSAWA KHANGTSEN PROJECT

The Sera Mey Tsawa Khangtsen Project seeks to preserve Tibet's unique cultural and spiritual heritage through deveoloping and maintaining within the exiled community the traditional Tibetan educational system, which seeks to cultivate a strong grounding in ethics and compassion.

Tsawa Khangtsen is one of 13 khangtsens (meaning ‘college’ or ‘house’) located at Sera Mey Monastic University in Bylakuppe, India. It was one of the branches of Sera Mey Monastery in Tibet. The khangtsen consisted of five hundred monks during the period before the Chinese invasion. Today approximately 120 monks reside and study at Tsawa Khangtsen, with more arriving each year. Each khangtsen represents an area of Tibet, or in the case of foreign monks, a country such as Bhutan or Nepal.

The project will have an immediate, profound impact on hundreds of Tibetan children and adolescents by establishing a residential school that will provide:

  • Housing
  • Basic education
  • Higher education
  • Essential health care

solar powered lights
These lighting systems were purchased through a grant rceived by the Foundation. Solar-powered lighting charges up during daylight hours so students can study at night or during power failures.
The Sera Mey Tsawa Khangtsen Project is a vehicle designed to facilitate the intentions of good-hearted individuals like you, and ensure that your contributions go directly to the Tibetan children who depend on your support.

Sean Brannan, the project’s founder and former executive director, coordinated these efforts upon the advice of Sera Mey Tsawa Khang tsen Woser Rinpoche in conjunction with The Dalai Lama Foundation’s Special Projects.

Dalai Lama Foundation

The Dalai Lama Foundation has established a direct link with the managers of Tsawa Khangtsen to ensure that 95% of donations are used for the development of the residential school.
