WiserEarth- Finding organizations you can work with

WiserEarth

WiserEarth is an online community space connecting the people, nonprofits and businesses working toward a just and sustainable world.

WiserEarth is another example of online technology being used to support the greater good. WiserEarth was inspired by Paul Hawken, Executive Director of the Natural Capital Institute, which sponsors the project. In their words:

“What has been missing is a map and directory of our network that includes the resources for communication and cooperation; in essence, an infrastructure through which to coordinate our efforts. WiserEarth… provides a way for us to become better connected and more effective at working together.”

Now two years old, WiserEarth has amassed over 110,000 profiles of progressive organizations— and you can search their database to find organizations and causes that you might want to support. They’ve nicely created interactive searches that you can slice by organizations, people, groups, events, jobs, resources, solutions and areas of focus. They also have an interactive map (of the world — using Google maps) so you can zoom in and locate organizations in space as well as conceptually. So you can explore in whatever way suits you best.

Beyond that, you can connect with others to share ideas and build your network, and can create a group for your own community of action. We can’t speak from personal experience about how well the organizing aspects work, but the database of organizations is quite complete and is truly impressive.

[Note: WiserEarth has begun an effort to open its database so that search results and data from WiserEarth can be embedded on other websites. This will allow programmers to build a search box on a blog or website that will search WiserEarth’s data and display it on a site. We provide a similar search mechanism for our DLF knowledgebase of ethics and peace-related resources. WiserEarth recently raised (USD) $10,000 to carry out the work.]

Periodically the Dalai Lama Foundation features an organization whose mission is
aligned with ours. This month’s organization is WiserEarth.

Have a suggestion for a future organization that you would like to see featured? Please let us know.

How May We Help You?

The Dalai Lama reminds us periodically that we can promote peace and understanding in the world finding opportunities to do things for others. In other words, our service to others is an important part of our lives. In that spirit, we’d love to hear from each of you about how the Foundation can provide services that would benefit you.

To start you thinking, here are three questions, but don’t limit yourself to just these — give us your honest, heartfelt and also your edgiest suggestions.

“What could we provide in terms of services, programs or products that you'd like to see?”

For example, should we provide more printed study guides; mobile-phone-based services; more information about The Dalai Lama; ticket information for his appearances; anything is fair game — let us know.

“What could we do to our website and our online services that would make it easier to use, or better address what you'd like to see or hear about?”

Think of things like our Facebook page, monthly newsletter, events page, twitter and more.

“What service that we now provide do you really value? And beyond that, what could we do to improve those services?”

Please send your comments and suggestions right away to feedback2009@dlfound.org. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
