The Garrison Institute -
Developmental Issues in Contemplative Education

Garrison, New York, April 4-6

This event is bringing together experts in the fields of child development and education to explore how mindfulness practices can contribute to improved school outcomes. The keynote address will be given by noted UCLA psychiatrist Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, author of The Developing Mind and The Mindful Brain.

This symposium is the culmination of three years of research, expert forums, and curriculum development work by the Garrison Institute's Initiative on Contemplation and Education. It is designed to give education professionals and interested members of the public a solid grounding in the latest theory, science, and applications in the field of contemplative education, with special regard to issues of developmental appropriateness. Recent developments in cognitive neuroscience and developmental psychology will be presented and specific methodologies being used in classrooms will be demonstrated and discussed.

This is the first time the developmental issues related to contemplative practices and activities have been addressed by such a high-level group of presenters. This fascinating new field is extremely exciting and many are convinced that it holds great promise for the future.

There is more information about the symposium in the flyer from the Garrison Institute. There is also more detailed information on the program and event available from the Garrison Institute.

Keeping up With Events

A huge percentage of visitors to the Foundation's website arrive because they were searching "where is the Dalai Lama now?" The Foundation's website comes up high in search results because we have an Events page where we keep track of His Holiness's upcoming public talks. Did you know that there's a primary source of information about His Holiness - which is the official site of the Dalai Lama? This site also announces dates of his Buddhist teachings, which are not listed on the Foundation's site. Our Events page also tracks ethics and peace related events around the world. Often the content on the events page is suggested by our members and readers. To suggest events, please send full information including website address for the event to events@dlfound.org. We post events only if there's a separate website containing detailed information, including phone, email or other ways to make inquiries. We focus only on events dealing with ethics or peace, and/or on education related to ethics and peace, and on His Holiness's non-religious activities. We do not post partisan political activities or political action events.

Using the Web when there's no Internet

There've been a bunch of articles recently inquiring "What if the Internet went down?" - for a long time. What would we do? How would we function?

Well, this is the situation almost every day in most of the world. There are two primary reasons. The first is that a connection may just be impossible due to distance. The second is that the connection, particularly for data, although available, may be prohibitively expensive.

Many people are trying to address these issues. As an example, the Foundation has leant its support to an organization that is expanding wireless Internet access in Northern India. Using Wi-Fi and repeaters/routers located high in the mountains, AirJaldi is making it possible for thousands of students to have Internet access they never had before.

An organization we encountered a few months ago has adopted a novel approach. Instead of connecting students to the net, they bring the contents of critical sites to the students. The eGranary makes web sites available locally, and the connection to the Internet isn't required.

Educators for NonViolence Needs Volunteers

Each summer, Educators for NonViolence (EFNV) holds an annual conference for teachers and others interested in nonviolence and its application in schools and education. This year's conference will be held in Oakland, California on July 18th and 19th.

Volunteers are needed in the San Francisco Bay Area, and some can help long-distance (via Internet), for anywhere from a few hours a month to a few hours a week, to help plan and execute the details leading up to the July meeting. If you're interested, please visit the conference website for more details on the conference and how you might help as a volunteer.

EFNV was founded by members of The Dalai Lama Foundation and the Metta Center for Nonviolence Education, and is fiscally managed by Metta Center.
